From his mother's obituary;

"Her last years were saddened by the sudden death of her husband on July 18, 1918, and the home was further broken up by the call of her son Leonard into the service of the U.S. on October 5, 1918. She received the sad message that her son was dying at Camp Grant, where he died the following day without any of his dear ones at his bedside. He was brought to the old home for burial and was laid to rest beside his father on October 11, 1918."
