Schlitze's Grave Stone
Verne,

I am very sorry you did not know we were raising money to buy Schlitze a grave stone. I did not mean to keep this information from anyone. I posted the info on the message board at Find A Death and I truly thought that anyone who would want to contribute would read it there. I only posted on Schlitze's memorial page on Find A Grave that we had raised money for a stone after I was contacted by someone who saw that someone had posted how sad it was that he didn't have one and wanted them to know that he would soon have a marker.

Schlitze was buried in a paupers grave by LA County and is sharing the grave with 2 other people. Because of where he is buried and because he is sharing the grave, we can only place a 12 x 24 granite stone that will be divided in thirds with his name on the bottom third. It will read Schlitze Surtees and the second line after that will read Sept.1, 1901, a small cross, then Sept. 24, 1971. He will be listed last on the stone as he was the first one buried. The total amount needed to reimburse LA County and pay for the stone was $378.37. We raised $403.00. After closing the paypal account, I was contacted by 2 others who wanted to donate and now we have $76.00 to buy flowers to place on his grave. I am planning on sending the money to Scott Michaels so he can buy flowers and place them on the grave the day the stone is placed. He is going to be there when the stone is placed to take pictures. I received contributions from all over the world from people who wanted to contribute. It was great of Scott to allow us to use his website to raise the money.

The cemetery has promised that they will give me a date when the stone will be placed. I am planning on calling them frequently for updates as there are others in the LA area that would like to meet there that day to have a small celebration and I'll be happy to send the info to you, also. I'm sure it will be a nice gathering. I'm not sure what people are planning on doing at this time as we are still waiting to hear from the cemetery. I also will not be able to attend as I live in Ohio and am currently enrolled at the university and will be in class at that time.

I loved reading the bio about Schlitze on Find A Death. As you can see, it was a very small amount of money that needed to be raised and was done very quickly. I feel that you did contribute to Schlitze's grave marker. So many of us were touched by the bio that you wrote that we kept thinking and posting about him. Several people wrote that if there was a way to place a marker for him that they would contribute. I thought that the least I could do was make a phone call to the cemetery. When I found out how it easily it could done, I felt that I had to finish what I had started. I am honored to have helped on this project.

I did a lot of research on Schlitze after I started this fund raiser, and your bio's on him are the most informative ones that I have found.

I am glad you contacted me, and will send you the information on the date the stone will placed when I receive it.

Have a great day! Shelly Lichoff AKA Colicky

Vampira
Thank you for your biography of Maila "Vampira" Nurmi. I was raised in Hollywood and when living at the Highland Towers as a child, I remember my mother had a bit part in an Ed Wood movie. Our upstairs neighbor was Mr. Criswell, the psychic, so we met many of Ed Wood's groupies at that time. They were beautifully depicted in the 1994 film. Your biographies are wonderful and are among the best I have read on these people. Thanks so very much for taking the time to write them. I also found the biographies of amazing people like Erich von Stroheim, Irene Dunne, Tyrone Power and Janet Gaynor to have been missing from "Find-a-Grave" so I went ahead and wrote them here. I hope others will realize this is one of the very few places to truly honor these remarkable people and pay them tribute for what they accomplished in their lives and to thank them for continuing to give us great joy through their films.
