I do add non-family graves, If I've added one of your friends or family members and you have additional information. Go to the "EDIT" tab on the memorial page to send me a correction or addition. I will do transfers to family members even if they are not within the findagrave guidelines, as long as the person you're asking for is not my own family.

Ancestry.com Acquires Find A Grave

Ancestry.com has purchased Find A Grave, the site with the largest database of free burial information and photos contributed by volunteers. The site will remain free, according to Ancestry.com, but see the Genealogy Insider blog to find out what will change at Find A Grave.

Ancestry.com Acquires Find A Grave
Posted by Diane

We just received an announcement that online genealogy company Ancestry.com has purchased Find A Grave, the site with the largest database of free burial information and photos contributed by volunteers.

Find A Grave will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Ancestry.com, and will continue to be managed by its founder, Jim Tipton.

I already hear people asking if the site will remain free. Yes, says Ancestry.com president Tim Sullivan. From the press release:

"We will maintain Find A Grave as a free website, will retain its existing policies and mode of operation, and look forward to working with Jim Tipton and the entire Find A Grave team to accelerate the development of tools designed to make it even easier for the Find A Grave community to fulfill its original mission to capture every tombstone on Earth."

I've found family tombstone photos on Find A Grave, and you probably have, too. The 18-year-old site has 100 million memorials to deceased people, and 75 million photos, a significant addition to Ancestry.com's content.

Ancestry.com plans for Find A Grave include a mobile app for uploading cemetery photos (Billion Graves, another cemetery website, has one), improved customer support, an easier editing of already-submitted memorials and foreign-language support.

This isn't the first time Ancestry.com has acquired a free, grassroots genealogy site: You may remember back in 2000, when the company (then called MyFamily.com) purchased RootsWeb. In 2008, RootsWeb was moved onto Ancestry.com servers.

We'll bring you more details as we learn them.

Update: Here's an FAQ on the acquisition from Tipton, who says he realized "Find A Grave had gotten too big to run it as I always have and I also realized that I might not be around some day ... and I wanted to make sure it had a stable home, while still retaining control over how it evolves. But ... I'm hoping this gives me the opportunity to do so many of the things that I've always wanted to do with the site now that I have some real resources behind me."

Would you like transfers?
You have sent edits for Bernard and Aline Morrison, and others, I think. Please let me know if you would like to have them transferred to you. The photos you have added are a nice touch. :)

RE: Congressman Abraham Maus Schermerhorn
I deleted the illustration from the Wikipedia pages for Abraham S. Schermerhorn and the 28th Congressional District, too.

I couldn't delete it from Wikimedia Commons, but I did change the description to indicate the correct identity of the subject.

RE: Congressman Abraham Maus Schermerhorn
You're right.

I don't know whether I looked at the wrong page or what, but the picture in question is clearly Jacob Maus Schermerhorn.

I'll delete it from the Abraham Maus Schermerhorn page and see if I can find one of him to add to his memorial page.

Schermerhorn people
I notice you have added some nice Schermerhorn pictures. Are they your family members?

Thank you for the edit information about the above person at Fairmount Cemetery here in Cape Girardeau. If you would like this transferred to you, I would be glad to do that. The reason I put her memorial page on was my self appointed mission to photograph every grave at Fairmount last year. It was finished last fall and was quite a task but I love doing this as a volunteer.
Your information in your bio was interesting about ancestry.com buying find a grave. I certainly hope it remains free. I am a member of ancestry and will continue to do that but a lot of people are not. Thanks for all your work. Ruth Smith

Sorry to hear about your dad, I will keep him and you and your family in my prayers.

Do you know if anyone in your husband's family have any pictures of William Williams? I would love to see what he looked like.

RE: Memorial 85173437
The obituary lists his children so I know it is my great grandfather but the link to the Washington State Archives lists parents as Peter and Ida (Summers) Williams. My William Williams with the children listed in the obituary had parents named James and Tabitha (Summers) Williams. His first wife was Julia Easley who he had all of his children with. He next married Hettie (Summers) Stockton and after about a year they divorced. They had no children together. Apparently he later married Frances Goodwell. She died in 1931 and he married Nellie (Athy) Bugg in 1934. According to my family, he was born August 12, 1866. I emailed Traycx and Alice is a cousin that I have been collaborating with. Alice agrees that his parents were James and Tabitha, in fact, she was the one who told me who his parents were because I did not have a clue. Anyway, thank you so much for your help! I have been looking for him for quite a while!
