I am a retired educator, historian, and author of local history, including Gaston County, North Carolina: A Brief History (History Press, Charleston, SC, 2008), Images of America: Cherryville, North Carolina (Arcadia Publishing, Charleston, SC, 2009); and the book of family genealogy called They Didn't Blow in on the Wind: Sketches of Wehunt Family History (out of print).
My German roots run deep here in the Catawba Valley (Lincoln, Gaston, Cleveland, Catawba, and Burke Counties, NC). I devoted many months every summer doing research in Pennsylvania for many, many years. Germany is one of my favorite places to visit and do research, but I have recently learned to embrace my Irish and English roots. My last trip to Switzerland, France, Germany, and the Netherlands was this year November 2-13, 2022.
I love traveling, photography, painting family portraits, and a good game of Chess. I fell in love with old cemeteries when I was 5 years old (my "snake boots" were always close at hand if I heard anyone say graveyard). I started doing genealogy when I was 12.
My main love is German research, but I can get interested in anyone's family history, even if there is no connection to my family.
I am presently deeply involved in DNA research here in the US, in Germany, and the Czech Republic. I am a member of DAR, Palatines to America (a German Research Group) Pennsylvania and New York Chapters, and the National Genealogical Society.
I earned a BA in Education with a concentration in History from Sacred Heart/Belmont Abbey College and a Masters Degree in Education with a concentration in Mathematics from Appalachian State University, and was certified by the State of North Carolina to teach Academically & Intellectually Gifted Children. I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1992 to study Art & Religion in India for 9 weeks, and spent three summers in Russian doing comparative education and writing curriculum for textbook companies to use in schools here in the US (the last trip a grant through NC State University).
