S/Sgt William H. Schermerhorn was a crew member on board of a B-24 of the 389th Bomb Group, 564 Bomb Squadron (H). The plane was flying over Africa en route to England. Approcching Marrakech, the plane ran out of fuel and crashed.
12 crewmembers died in the crash and another two died a few days later. There was one survivor
1Lt Cecil Schrader, T/Sgt George W. Wells Jr, S/Sgt William H. Schermerhorn, S/Sgt James A. Adovasio and S/Sgt Ralph L. Peterson's remains could not be identified and they were buried as a Group Burial in plot 24, graves 280, 281, 284, 287 and 289. After the war their remains were repatriated and reburied as a Group Burial in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery (Missouri) in grave 79-513/514
