"A Certain Kind of Death" -- I've seen that one. I agree that it was awful how they were dumping the cremains!! Wouldn't the boxes have stacked nicely inside the grave? And what, can they reuse the boxes? Sell them for scrap metal? What's the benefit of dumping the contents and keeping the boxes -- space-saving?
I went to our city-run cemetery today (Mount Hope), and one of the ladies there mentioned that San Diego is looking towards cremation for indigents. Right now, they pay for a full-body burial, but our homeless population is pretty high...
If you like documentaries, or documentary-type things, I enjoyed (and bawled my eyes out) through Terry Pratchett's "Choosing to Die" and Showtime's documentary series "Time of Death."

I haven't "reported a problem" on your photo requests because I'm still trying to get answers. Since Walter passed away in 1929, he would most definitely be in the "North Building" as the main building wasn't completed until the late 50's. However, the mausoleum has no record of him or Elsie in their main files. Elsie's obituary is a little more informative and specifies she was cremated, so I'm assuming Walter was cremated, too, and in that case, I've indexed all the niches in the North Building and I don't see their names in any of my spreadsheets. There's another option -- the "vaults" -- high-occupancy crypts (where a full casket would normally go, but they fill it with two shelves of cremations) at a more affordable cost. There's a binder full of those names, which was checked, and the Deeds are not there, either. So I guess that's bad news of sorts that they're somewhat missing...
But there's good news. The mausoleum still has their original cremation ledgers (which are beautifully hand-written and have that musty old book smell), but they're not always willing to let people look at and handle them. I've been by twice this week to try get my hands on the ledgers, but with no luck. I'll try again over the weekend and keep you posted.

Thanks for sponsoring my cousin, Mary Lou's page. I couldn't believe that I requested it, it was claimed the same day, and posted soon after by a brand new member. I thought she did a good job. Thanks again!
|Nephele||Howard Eslinger's first wife|
I have transcribed the cemetery where Howard is located and she in not on any headstone there. If she was buried there, she doesn't have a head stone. You can try calling the Mt. Vernon Memorial Park where Howard is buried and ask them if she is there. They might know.
