Since I developed an interest in finding my roots, Find A Grave has been a great resource. If more people would connect family links when possible, it would be even better. Personally, I get a sense of satisfaction when I can link a person to their parents or spouse.

One of my grandfathers was born in Tonawanda, NY. His father emigrated to NY from Germany in 1881, married a German-American woman, and lived in a house on the bank of the Erie Canal.

My other grandparents were born in Florida, with their ancestors moving south into Georgia and Florida from Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.

I am interested in the names Gillett(e), Licht, Brantley, and Page. Also, I have interest in related families that the Gillett(e)s married into, such as Boston, Richards, and Stewart.

If I am maintaining a memorial a relative of yours, and you are more closely related than I am, I will be happy to transfer maintenance to you. I will go beyond the Find A Grave mandatory transfers.

If you simple have a strong interest in someone, simply explain your interest, and chances are, I will transfer the memorial to you. While I agree with Find A Grave’s position that the purpose is not to see how many memorials or relatives you can collect, I also believe that a relative or friend is more likely to maintain and take care of a memorial than a disinterested person.

I have photographed a number of grave markers. I don't try to be fancy or artistic. I go for maximum legibility of the inscriptions. Sometimes this means manipulating the picture in Photoshop to bring out faded or worn inscriptions, leaving the marker lighter or darker than it appears in person.

You are welcome to use my photos of markers or people for any non-commercial purpose, such as personal family trees, or posting on Ancestry.com and similar sites. I can often provide a higher resolution copy should you want one.

I strive to give credit for photos of people or graves that I have not taken (or inherited). If I have inadvertently (and that’s what it would be) not given you proper credit for one of your photographs, please message me and I will correct the oversight.

I expect the same courtesy from others. A simple “photo courtesy of Hank Gillette” is sufficient, or retain the attribution I have for photos that are not mine.
