The Rev. Jacob Merkel was born June 4, 1832 in Rheinballen, Prussia (Germany). When eleven years of age, he immigrated to Brazil, and made his home in Petropolis, where he obtained his elementary education. His father had died in Germany and his mother died while at sea. Both of his brotherís and sister died in Brazil. In 1850 he moved to New Orleans.
On the February 11, 1859, he married Christine Helmstedter.
