Bio Photo "In all of us, there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage - to know who we are and where we came from.

Without this enriching knowledge, we are left with a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, without the sure knowledge of our provenance, this yearning yields to an emptiness, a vacuum and the most disquieting loneliness."

RE: A Quick Hello
Thank you, John, for checking in and for your prayers and good wishes. My oncologist won't use the word "cure" until I've been cancer-free for five years, but it's coming up on two years and the quarterly CT-scans have all been negative.

Thanks again, and I hope that all's well with you.

RE: James Martin
Thanks. In the meantime, what would you like me to add to the accounts of the Martins on Find a Grave?

RE: James Martin
Hi,

Sorry for the delay. Been busy grading my summer class.

John Wise is a Strickland-Martin descendant. While he was alive and for a long time after his death, he had up an incredible web site with copies of primary source material. Ultimately, some time after his death, his web site was removed. You might check out the book From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek by Buddy Sullivan, published in 2000. Sullivan incorporates a lot of references to John Wise.

As for Native American heritage in the Strickland-Martin line (also my ancestry), I’ve had one DNA test come back with a small amount of Native American heritage and another showing none. An important point about American Indian (Native American) DNA ancestry should be made. Anthropologist Mary Helms created the term “colonial Indian tribes” in the 1960s to refer to societies which originated as recognizable entities only as a direct result of colonial policies. Colonial tribes are often a racially mixed people that over time became socially identified more with their Indian ancestry rather than their African or white ancestry. These groups are culturally Indian while ultimately having little, if any, Indian DNA. Descendants who ended up with more Old World genes (in this case, European and/or African) than New World genes (American Indian) had a better chance of surviving diseases brought in from overseas. Colonial tribes include groups as diverse as the Miskito Indians of eastern Nicaragua (whom Helms studied); various Amazon tribes in Brazil; the Lumbee Indians of North Carolina; the Black Seminoles of Oklahoma, Mexico, and the Bahamas; and many others. The term colonial tribe attempts to get at the idea that someone can be culturally something (American Indian, for example) without being biologically something. So, it should not be surprising that someone with, for example, a Lumbee Indian ancestor would not necessarily test as having significant American Indian DNA.

If you have further questions, please let me know. Thanks.

RE: James Martin
I referred to the incredible array of primary source material the late John Wise collected at his web site. How would you like me to rewrite the account of James Martin's birth?

Valdosta, Ga
Hey John, I am planning to visit Valdosta soon, and am wondering if you could possible lead me on what and where I should look..
I know I will visit the cemeteries, and possibly try to tour the old house, which is now a private residence.. but are there any records at the court house I should look for?
Do you think that old bible you spoke about is perhaps located there... Do you know of any still living relatives?
Was going to go on the Fourth of July, but have changed my mind, it's too hot for visiting graves now.
Since I don't know anything about Valdosta, thought maybe you might suggest a few things?

Thankfully,
Kay

RE: Lucious B. Martin son of Stephen Martin
Hey John,
Good to hear back from you. I thought linking Lucious to his dad's page would be sufficient. Anyway, thanks for making the request.

I just got the supplemental back for Jasper Martin from the UDC. I finished Lucious yesterday and am working on adding McDuffie's now. In all I'll have 22 patriots (Grandfathers and Uncles) honored before I'm finished. That's a wonderful legacy, isn't it!

I'd love to see your Brooks tree. Possibly one or more of them served that I haven't counted?...

Kay

WILLIAM POWELL 1762-1836
#155160949
I appreciate the biography posted even though I don't know of a relationship to the Powell's but there are some intersections. I am trying to find a connection of Evan/Evin Pierson/Pearson/Person and Rachael Cannon. Rachael Cannon was first wife of Abraham Tate, related to Perryman Tate. All 3 of these families/person are listed in the bio.

Is the bio an excerpt from a larger document? if so, can I get access to it? Do you know of any other connections to Tate/Cannon/Pearson?
thanks again for the bio post.

Thank you so much for listing the grave of William Hunter. He is my G, G, G, Grandfather. I've been looking for him everywhere. Not that easy living in the UK though!

Once again, thank you!!!
