Louisa Slifer Memorial# 11578069
November 5, 1915---. … DEATH PARTS OLDEST COUPLE IN THE U. S.
Mary Slifer, Aged 96, Dies at Lanark, Ill. ---
Her Husband a Native of Burkittsville, Survives.
Mary Louise Waters Slifer, aged 97 years, 8 months and 6 days, wife of Thomas Slifer, aged 97years, formerly of Burkittsville, this valley, died at Lanark, Ill., on Sept. 18 last.
Mr. and Mrs. Slifer were said to be the oldest married couple in the United States, and on March 24 last, they celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary.
For 25 years the aged couple lived with their daughter, Mrs. Joseph Stitzel, two miles west of Lanark. Nine years of their married life, the Slifers spent in Burkittsville. The other 67 passed in Ogle, Stephenson, and Carroll Counties of Illinios. After more than seventy-six years together, with their joys and their sorrows, the union was broken by the home-going of Mother Slifer.
On March 24, 1839, Mr. and Mrs. Slifer were married at Petersville. Mrs. Slifer, before marriage, was Mary Louise Waters, of Montgomery county, Md. She was the youngest of a family of five children and at the early age of three years was left an orphan by the death of both parents less than seven months apart. Twelve or thirteen years were spent with an uncle. She united with the Church of the Brethren June 18, 1841, in Washington County, Md. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Slifer---Mary C., now the widow of Eld. Joseph Stitzel, late of Lanark; John W. and Elizabeth (Kinney). The latter died in October one year ago.
Father Slifer is still able to walk about the house, going up and down stairs without assistance. He does not venture out of doors very much. Father Slifer was wont to refer to his wife as his “queen.” Their long life together was a most happy one. On the day of Mother Slifer’s death, he said, “We have lived long and happily together, and I am lonely now. I am ready and waiting to go, too.”
One year ago Mrs. Slifer fell and fractured her hip, from which she never fully recovered. She was an aunt of Mrs. Ann Doub, of Middletown, and an Aunt of Mr. Kinna Waters, of near Myersville. [BRUNS CITZ 12NOV2015]

Duh...thanks for the photo request. It didn't even occur to me to add it. Geesh. I'm losing it (laughing sarcastically).

Thanks for adding little Mary. Now, if I only knew who her Smith grandparents are.
Thank you for the pic.
|Melanie Christy||RE: Hello Cousin|
Hi Fritz! Long time no see! Thanks for the heads up. I will keep an eye out for new cousins. I know you have photographed those stones before. You have been an amazing help. I think that's why you're still in Millidgeville!
Have an awesome day.
Your FAVORITE cousin,
|Connie Lou||RE: Calvary Cemetery Sterling|
I will try to take care of the new memorials with as much care as you have in the past, but you have set the bar high.
