Bio and Links
Bio Photo For 44 years I stayed as far away from cemeteries as possible, then I decided to find out about my grandfather's family.

Any genealogist can tell you the rest.

I have taken it upon myself to "adopt" a couple cemeteries with the intention of posting every headstone in them. Therefore, I have created a lot of memorial pages for people I have never met. If I have a memorial page for a member of your family, simply ask and I will turn it over to you. Please tell me your relationship in your request.

John S Mullen, 2nd MN, Civil War Vet
Here is an update to John S Mullen, including dates.

John S Mullen
b:1837 (Ireland)-d:May 25, 1911, Chicago, Cook, Illinois.

Mullen served as Corporal in the 2nd MN, Co D and was wounded in the hand at Missionary Ridge Nov 23, 1863. Participated in the Fenian Raids in Canada West (Ontario), June 1866, under Fenian Colonel John O'Neill. Mullen lead a company of Fenians (Irish Republican Army) and was credited with burning Sauerwine Bridge during the Battle of Ridgeway. They rejoined the main Fenian body to disperse the Canadian Forces and later escaped back to Buffalo where he became a US prisoner aboard the USS Michigan, with the rest of the Fenians, later released.

Also, he had a very colorful career in Chicago politics after the war, serving as a customs inspector. At one point, he was replaced in this position by a Confederate veteran because of politics and the newspapers had stories of how a Union Veteran wounded serving his country was being replaced by a rebel traitor.

In his later years, Mullen is listed in Chicago directories as "Old Soldier". He died in Chicago and buried in this cemetery.

Hopefully you can update Mullen's page.

Keep up the great work and thank you!

Margaret Surfleet Grave
Gary,
Wondering if you could transfer memorial #33809077 for Margaret Surfleet. She was originally Fischer, born in Austin(a neighborhood of Chicago now)/Chicago, and died in Cary. She was my 2nd cousin, twice removed. If you do not want to make a transfer, could I use the stone photo for my family tree with the understanding that you would be credited?

Thanks for what you are doing!

GW Taylor is definitely down there!
Thanks so much for the picture that gave me my first real clue to my GG Grandfather. I wrote the county register and she could not find anyone by that name who was in the 41st Regiment. I just found his grave stone request in the national archive. It wasn't requested until 1891 and he died in 1874 so maybe his record burned when many public records did in the early 1930's. So what I had read about Company E of the 41st Ill Inf records being incomplete was correct. Now to find out who his neighbor is. Thanks again! Soupie

Four Murphy Graves, Greenwood Cemetery, McHenry County
I manage four memorials for members of the Murphy family at this cemetery, related to me, which you transferred to me in 2009. If you are still interested in this cemetery, I would like to transfer them back to you. At age 82, I want to transfer my memorials to younger people before I become a memorial.
