I have been researching my family since the mid-1970s. I've been fortunate to have much help from friends and family in my search back to the 1600s in the US on my mother's side and in Germany on my father's family. Along the way I've learned a lot of history and how it may have affected my ancestors in the regions in which they lived. In return I hope I've been able to share information with my many distant cousins.
Taking pictures of gravestones to put on-line helps me pay back the many volunteers whose work in areas not so accessible to me has benefited me.
