I found Find-A-Grave (aka FAG) accidentally, but I love the idea, I hope that it always stays free to the public. I hope everyone finds it, I have learned just how genetics/health play an important (but unknown) part of our lives, so knowing family members is very important. If there is something I've posted that you question, or are concerned about; please contact me. I dislike FAG members that do not accept messages or refuse to make changes. I'd like to get the most information possible on the memorial as correct and complete as possible. I try to use as many sources as possible (that I can get to) cross-checking so that the information is correct; such as Census, both Federal and State records, Cemetery records (FYI many stones have incomplete info), Church Records, Funeral home records, County records, State records, obituaries, & from the families; but I know mistakes can be made, from information in newspapers (especially) to families memories or in other family trees. I include all wives/ex-wives as it is possible to use that information in tracing on someone else connected to that person. I have documented my mother's family back to Revolution (so now I am a member of DAR) and further back to other countries.
Please let me know about anything. I am extremely happy to share responsibilities for memorials, so if wanted please request Transfer Memorial, I use the Virtual Cemetery option to combine my family members, as well as for Special persons who might have extensive families.
One problem that comes up a LOT, is duplication; since I work mainly from church records, I have no idea if indeed there are 2 cemeteries; or 1 cemetery with various different names that were used over years; both instances have occurred. But what is the right answer?? I have found 1 person who has two stones in 2 cemetery's in 2 different STATES (also 2 countries); perhaps one is a cenotaph; but where is the body actually?? Or a different person entirely? I can't tell you because I don't know. I have found where a person was buried to start with, then because of changes for example; dams, family wants to move them, another problem is those people who have tried to add information to; and these people actually refuse/abandoned memorial; to add information; so there is a duplication; then keep as much information, to note the 1st burial (disregarding the date when entered into FAG) as a memorial and make changes to show they were here now have been moved to here; very important for tracking family moves throughout the years.
Another problem is that because I do use so many DIFFERENT records is that I do not know if there is a stone or not, until I check that cemetery FAG to see if it has been documented; sometime it has, sometimes it has not; many times the families were so poor (or transitory) that no stone was ever put up. I do the unknown burials when there is plenty of information to show that they even existed just not where they are buried, death certificates help out a lot, because the place where to body is being sent to is listed there.
Myself? I am researching for my own inter-related family branches as well; Bahr, Baker, Hays, Keyes, Kussmann, McLaughlin, Meeker, Shaw, Visger, and Walker (up to great-great-grandparents and all their siblings so far in most lines).
I found a statement about links that is similar to my own beliefs. Myself? I believe in adding all information as found because others might not have that particular detail that will help them. I have requested of Melaney Friesen Shaum to be able to use it and with permission, here it is:
