After seeing "Saving Private Ryan", and reading "Flags of Our Fathers", I've been deeply touched by the enormous contribution to my life the veterans of World War II made. That was a time when men were men. Learning that Eric Fleming (Rawhide) was one of those heroes I thought he needed a final rememberance.

Thank you for creating this memorial. I have recently found a magazine article from Peru that states that Eric Fleming's body was donated to the San Fernando medical school of the University of San Marcos. Afterwards, his remains were placed in a common grave in the Presbitero Maestro cemetery in Lima. The October 10, 2002 article in Caretas magazine can be found at: http://www.caretas.com.pe/2002/1742/articulos/fleming.phtml

Anne, this memorial is lovely, but I have a quick question. It lists a particular Evelyn Piel as his daughter from a calculated relationship. However, Fleming was 14 at the time of this child's death in 1939. This child is listed as daughter of Henry Jr. Any clue what this could mean???

I don't understand why dear Eric couldn't be brought home. I read the reports that stated his body was "too mutilated" to be used at the San Fernando Medical School in Lima. If that's so, what on earth did they do with him? He should have been flown back to the States, cremated and taken to his ranch in Hawaii. He did state in his will that if it wasn't possible for his body to be studied, he wanted to be cremated.
Thank you for the bio. Our only consolation in this long-ago tragedy, is that he will always be frozen in time, at age 41.

I am Carl's daughter Janet and I have just started watching Rawhide in the past year I remember it when my Dad and brother use to watch it in the early 60s but I was still into young kiddie stuff only 3 or 4 yrs old. At 50 I have bought collections of rawhide. Gil Favor is my favorite ever. Janet Poston

Thank you for the biography of Eric Fleming. I wish he could have lived on to enjoy his retirement in Hawaii. Here is a link to the US Foreign Service report of his death:
Based on this report which states his remains were turned over to the Faculty of Medicine, University of San Marcos, Lima, I doubt he is buried at a "University of Peru". Do you have any information regarding that? Thank you.

I was just wanting to know where you got your information? The imdb.com states he died after he dove in to the river after he got thru the rapids and that his body was not found for 3 day's. You know what you said. So I would like to know what information is correct?

Thank you so much for the memorial for Eric Fleming. Gil Favor from Rawhide has been my hero since I was a child. I visit the site frequently and it is a comfort to be able to leave messages to honor such a wonderful man. Although he has been gone for more than forty two years, Eric Fleming lives on in the hearts and minds of his fans who will always love him.
With sincere thanks,

Anne, Could you be more specific as to the burial place for Eric Fleming? Rawhide was one of my favorite shows and I have often wondered why we had seen no more of him. I have been a missionary to Peru since 1975 but recently got involved with photographing headstones for people when I am in the States. I ran across the memorial of Eric Fleming on Find a Grave and, of course, was interested. I can find no University of Peru in Lima, nor Universidad de Peru. There are many universidades in Lima, Peru. An address or street name would help. Neither could I find a cemetery of that name. I would like to photograph his grave site if possible.
Thank you for the bio. Cyndy Myers
