My name is Sarah Grace Monroe. I am from the Austin area in Central Texas. I have been researching my family history since 1995. The surnames and people I am interested in finding more about are:

1. Monroe, Franks, Allen, Tueton and Graves from the Gonzales/DeWitt/Lavaca/Bexar County areas in Texas. Moses or Mose Monroe was a former slave from Mississippi and his wife Sarah also. Moses' son, Giles Monroe married Pinkie Franks in Lavaca County, Texas. John Henry Allen and his sister, Lula, were former slaves from Brandon, Mississippi.

2. Louis Horst from Darmstat, Germany and his wife Margretha (known as "Mary"), who was from Frankfurt am Main, Bavaria, Germany. Louis Horst was a butcher by trade, but once owned the Horst Plantation where the the main University of Texas campus is located in Austin, Texas. Louis' son, Charles, had four children by a slave named Frances Jane Ridge Densmore.

3. Ernest Edward "Ed" Horst (son of Charles Horst and Frances Densmore) and wife, Sarah Jane (Shackelford) Horst, Jack Shackelford (or Shackleford), plus the Caldwell and Foster families in Travis County, Texas.

4. Wilford and Mary Simien (Simien surname sometimes spelled Semien) family from St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas and San Francisco Bay area in Northern California.

5. Frank Hannah and his family who were relatives of Frances Jane Ridge Densmore. Frances' parents: Jefferson Ridge (a Cherokee farmer from Arkansas) and Corine King. The Hannah's lived in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri at one time.

6. Lastly, the Clayborne family from Columbus, Texas and Houston, Texas areas. Some Claybornes were originally from Virginia.

Please note: Most of the family information that I have collected and documented has come from family interviews, Family Bibles, death certificates and/or head stones. I have tried to provide the most accurate information known to me at the time.

Although I wrote Our Family History Cookbook, from Slavery to the Present, in 2005 and updated the information with a new book in 2019, and now updating the book in 2022. Researching and confirming my family history is an ongoing project. I would appreciate any comments or corrections of the data provided. I am also aware that I have many living relatives in America that I have never met. I would truly enjoy hearing from them.
