Mark, Thank you for your comment. I remember visiting your relatives in Lumberton, NC in the 1960s. Good to hear from you.

Mark Gaines Jessop,
I was killing some time on the internet and came across the picture you posted of the grave of Mary Louisa Shoup Gaines. She was my great grandmother and, I believe, yours also.
I am the son of George Thomas Gaines who was the son of Louis Shoup Gaines who was, I believe, your grandfather's brother. My father died three years ago at the age of 84 in Statesville, NC. I remember my father talking about visits to his relatives in Ohio when he was a child, but, to my knowledge, the only ones I ever met were two cousins named Charlotte and Margaret who came through North Carolina on their yearly trip to Florida.
I have an original portrait - it's about eight by eleven inches and done in colored charcoal or pencil - of our great-great-great-grandfather, Benjamin Pendleton Gaines. It was given to me by my grandfather fifty-two years ago on my sixth birthday. If I can take a decent photograph of the portrait and find an appropriate place to post it, I want to put it on the internet and share it with you and others who are interested in Gaines ancestry.
