|Bio and Links|
Photographing and documenting cemeteries is an activity that many users of this site enjoy doing. Some of us do it to help others, others want to create a historical record, and for some it's simply the outdoor enjoyment that walking cemeteries can provide. These are all valid reasons but at its core it's just a hobby. |
I think that it's important to remember that every headstone represents somebody who was (and in many cases still is) loved and cherished by his/her family. And every family grieves the loss in their own way. Some are comforted by memorials and photos of the headstones of their loved ones, while others find such memorials or photos upsetting, or even ghoulish. Every viewpoint should be respected. Respect for the wishes of a family should be paramount, especially when dealing with a subject as sensitive as the final resting places of a family's loved ones.
I believe that cemetery documentation is a worthwhile endeavor but that no hobby should ever infringe upon a family's wishes. Every family deserves the right to remember their loved ones as they choose. I am very sensitive to the wishes of families when it comes to memorializing their loved ones and welcome input as to what they would like to see (or not see) on these pages.
