Photographing and documenting cemeteries is a hobby that many users of this site enjoy doing. People may say they do it to help others, or to provide a historical record, or for the exercise walking cemeteries may provide. These are all valid reasons, but at its core, it's just a hobby. |
It's important to remember that every headstone represents somebody who was (and in many cases still is) loved and cherished by his/her family. And every family grieves the loss in their own way. Some are comforted by memorials and photos of the headstones of their loved ones, while others find such memorials or photos upsetting, or even ghoulish. Every viewpoint should be respected. Sensitivity to the wishes of a family should be paramount, especially when dealing with a subject as sensitive as the final resting places of a family's loved ones.
I believe that cemetery documentation is a worthwhile endeavor but no hobby should ever violate the wishes of a family. Every family deserves the right to remember their loved ones as they choose.
