During the 1840's 8 of 9 Matthews siblings (or cousins) immigrated from Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland and first settled on the borders of Brooke Co., Virginia (now W.V.) and the state of Ohio, before the families moved to the Lafayette and Johnson counties in Missouri.

The Missouri settlers were Robert, Thomas, James, William, David and Andrew Matthews and Jane, who married William Simpson and Rose, who married William Pool, Sr.

The 9th sibling [or cousin] was Patrick Matthews, first immigrated into lower Canada with his wife, Mary and their infant son, William. The family later moved to Vermont for a couple of years before finally settling into the Northern part of New York.

Patrick, wife, Mary and 7 of their 8 children are buried in St. Lawrence County, New York. Patrick and Mary's son, Hugh, who was married in 1875, moved to Northern California and he and his wife raised three sons. The Hugh Matthews family are buried in San Benito County, California.

We were able to verify the Matthews siblings/cousins names from an old 1856 letter written by their elderly Uncle Patrick Mathews of Lynchburg, Virginia and from Uncle Patrick's 1870 Will, which showing all 9 of the Mat(t)hews, Simpson and Pool siblings [or cousins], as his nephews and nieces, as well as listing some of their children's names.

We're now hoping to find the names of the 9 Mat(t)hews siblings [cousins] parents' in Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. We would like to find the Mat(t)hews descendant or Antique Collector, who is willing to share this information from one of the old Mat(t)hews Family Bibles.

If you are a Mat(t)hews, Simpson or Pool descendant or a descendant of Patrick Matthews of New York or an Antique Collector and would like to share any Matthews family information with us, please feel free to contact us by using the "Edit Suggestion" link on any of our Matthews' memorials.
