Here is my story and some thoughts……

My name is Matilda Hall or that is what my "original" birth certificate says. I say "original" because I was taken home by an incredible couple at the age of 8 days old and the adoption was final at the end of a year.

When my granddaughter was 3 she had a medical problem and as with most adoptees, I had no family medical history. I had to find who I was and where I came from. So began my search. Thanks to several volunteers in the adoption field, I did find out who I was, the medical history was obtained and my granddaughter is doing great and has made me a great grandmother.

A dear friend of mine who had claim to 18 documented ancestors through the DAR was my mentor the first year of my research in finding out "where I came from". I took to genealogy like a duck to water. Boy what a fantastic ride it has been the last 25+ years.. Most people grow up knowing something about their heritage, I learned mine generation by generation with a ton of hard work, travel and lots of interviews with people. I went from being a "mutt" to a very well rooted American. My Hall and Tarrant families were in Virginia & Maryland 100 years before the Revolutionary War. Yes, I do stand taller and I'm damned proud to be an American.

Any memorials you see listed under my name are more than my relatives. I can honor them by filling in as much information as I have. With the help of this website, I can leave a "trail" for future generations. I can give the brave men & women people who served in the military a special thank you for their service. A relative of mine has served defending our freedoms from before the Revolutionary War through our latest conflict in Iran and Afghanistan.

I don't ask for any memorials I am not related to. There are many kind people who have made memorials for my relatives with headstone photos and then were gracious enough to transfer them to me. To these "angels" saying thank you isn't enough. You really should get a hug for all your hard work in documenting cemeteries that some of us can't visit. If you choose not to transfer a memorial to me, so be it. But I won't add my heritage, which is so valuable to me, or my research into your memorial, it will remain how you made it. If keeping your "memorials made" count high is that important to you, remember your name will always remain as the creator of the memorial. Also keep in mind that ancestry.com has now directly linked FAG memorials to their site. So someone finding a blank memorial will not be very happy or impressed with your management skills. If you are related to a memorial I ask for, please let me know. I am always looking for new "cousins" and I will add additional information.

If you see "no cemetery" listed, most historians will tell you that finding the exact burial places of those in the Civil War and before 1900, well, there are some that are just impossible to find. There were a ton of just plain folks that had family plots at the outside edge of their farms with headstone markers that didn't last. Then we had the Tennessee Valley Authority projects, new roads, residential housing, and shopping centers etc that have eliminated some early burial grounds. So check why there is no cemetery listed. FAG does allow cremations to be added to this site with no exact burial location listed.
