Thanks for the military info on Edward. Since you are interested in the civil war did you know most of the Michigan Calvary did not ride horses but only had mules? Jan

You might want to check this memorial in Evergreen Cemetery, Alpena. It appears the person's name is Alfred Smith and may be listed under the last name of Smith already. Thanks,
I have updated the memorial wording. I believe the person meant to say he was a flag holder in parades for the local GAR post - not that he was a metallic flag holder found in a cemetery. So I've left that part in. Thx for the heads up.
