Bio

John William Grimm was born October 16, 1931 in Clendenin, Kanawha Co., WV at home of his grandfather, John Herbert Swiney. His parents lived in Charleston, WV, and later moved to Huntington, WV. In 1939, the family moved to Reno, NV; in 1941 to Little Rock, AR; and in 1945 to Montgomery, AL. He graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1949 in Montgomery, and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now called Auburn University) in 1953 with a BA in business. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the Air Force and reported to Lackland AFB, TX. From there he went to Francis E. Warren AFB, WY for the Supply Officer School course. His first permanent duty assignment was Patrick AFB, FL. Shortly after reporting to Patrick AFB, he married Dora Lee Glass. Their daughter, Dorthay Lynn, was born at the Patrick AFB Hospital. His next assignment was to the 6921st Security Group at Misawa Air Base, Japan, where their son, John Alan, was born. Other assignments were Goodfellow AFB, in San Angelo, TX; Saigon, S. Vietnam where he was assigned to the MAC-V headquarters as a logistics officer; L.G. Hanscom Field, Bedford, MA, where he eventually became the Commissary Officer. Other assignments were to Izmir, Turkey, as the Commissary Officer for Cigli Air Base and Izmir; and Randolph AFB, TX, where he was on the Inspector General team for two years, and then assigned as Chief, Services Division until he retired from the Air Force with the rank of Major in May 1973. He was employed by the Internal Revenue Service as a Tax Auditor at Greenville, NC from July 1953 until December 1973 when he accepted a civilian position as Commissary Officer at the Robinson Barracks Commissary in Stuttgart, Germany. Five years later (1978) he was transferred as the Commissary Store Manager to Ft. Bragg, NC where he remained for 15 years. He retired from Civil Service in September 1993, and moved to Kennesaw, GA, to be near his son, and his aging parents who were living in a retirement home in Chattanooga, TN. He now lives in Acworth, GA.

In 1994 he was a volunteer at the Big Shanty Museum, now known as the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History (Home of the General). A year later, he was hired as a part-time employee and eventually managed the Gift Shop for 16 years.
