Mahlon 88105487 and Martha 102451520 Blackford are linked in the Norwalk, IA Cemetery. The dates for Martha (on the tombstone) don't appear to be the right Martha who married Mahlon. Bible record and info obtained from her obituary (Dunns funeral home) indicate she was born 2/22/1853 and died 4/11/1938. She married at age 16 on 10/31/1868 to Mahlon. You're very welcome - I love taking pictures in the autumn - the foliage is such a great backdrop :) I took pics of all the Blodgetts in that plot if you need them.

RE: Bennethum
Cindy,

I added photos today of a grave for, Maria M. Bennethum. The Story County Genealogy's inventory of the cemetery done in 1994 states the stone reads, "Maria M. wife of ? Bennethum, died May 13, 1881, aged 29Y 7 m 23 d (very hard to read)". As you can see from the photos I took today, the marker is totally unreadable today. The death date matches the date for the daughter of J.C. and M.A. Bennethum.

If you don't think this is the correct tombstone, let me know and I'll remove the pictures from the memorial. I could find no stone for Martha Bennethum in the WPA or Story County Inventory of this cemetery nor from my search of the cemetery.

Yes, I will add the photo of their daughter. I have more photo's for them, close ups for each. An error message appeared when I was downloading. Please check the memorial pages is a few days after I have a chance to try again. I know where their daughter Queene Buland is buried and will get photos for her also.

RE: Bennethum
According to the Story County Genealogical Societies survey of tombstones in 1996, there is no tombstone for a "Martha Bennethum". The obituary I include in my last note is for a Maria M. Bennethum Nee Smith who died on May 13, 1881. I believe this is who you are looking for rather than Martha. The death dates match anyway.

I suspect that Maria was the first wife of George David Bennethum. He marries first in 1875 and then I suspect after Maria's death in 1881 he remarries in 1884.

I'll check the cemetery soon to see if I can find a tombstone for a Maria Bennethum with the correct date of death.

Sorry for the confusion

RE: Bennethum
I believe Martha may actually be the first wife of George David Bennethum and may have been known and buried as Maria. G.D. Bennethum is in the 1880 census with a wife, "M." aged 27 and a daughter, "M." aged 4. The Story County Genweb site shows George marrying on June 10, 1875 and again on 2 December 1884. Below is an obituary that I suspect might be for the person you're looking for since she died in 1881:

From Nevada Representative May 18, 1881

Iowa Centre Items.

Our community was shocked on Saturday morning by the reported death of Mrs. Maria Benethum Nee Smith wife of George Benethum. Mrs. B. who was in the prime of life, has lived in our village from girlhood, was well known and respected by every one, she leaves a husband and two children with whom we bow in sympathy and sadness. The funeral services were by Rev. J. A. Lewis, at the M. E. Church.

What do you think?
