RE: Clara Grace Martin Phillips I talked to Bucktrout again today and they sent me a copy of her obit. Her father was Samuel Rossen Martin and mother was Matilda Boyd Martin. She was married to Fred Phillips who died in Sept 1972. This doesn't seem right since her obit says she was a widow.Someone from Norfolk named Herman C Martin paid the bill for her funeral. Do these names mean anything to you? A Rev King from the Williamsburg Presbyterian church performed the graveside service. I talked to the caretaker at Cedar Grove and he is going to look for a Martin and/or a Phillips plot, Bucktrout thinks maybe she was buried in a family plot and didn't get a stone. That doesn't explain the city not having a record of her. Still looking, Annamcgreer@gmail.com
David Laughlin - Woodlawn I tried to send you a message before, and the system deleted it after it was "under review". So I will try again. I am wondering if your grandfather, David Laughlin's memorial is in the wrong cemetery (Woodlawn in Compton). His bio says he was living in, and passed away in, Santa Monica. There is a Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica. I think it would be wise if you contact the one in Santa Monica and find out if he is buried there. The Woodlawn in Compton is an old cemetery, not in good shape, and poorly staffed.
I'm just trying to be helpful. If I am in error, just let me know.
RE: Clara Grace Martin Phillips Adrienne, The city clerk has gone over the city records and still cannot find Clara. I will try to go back to the funeral home and see if they will pull her file (sometimes they won't do this for a non-relative). Are you sure about the date of death? Can you email me a copy of the death certificate? regards, Ann
RE: Clara Grace Martin Phillips Adrienne, I had a little medical emergency this week that has distracted me. Next week I will call the city and the library, both of them have or are gathering lists of who is buried in Williamsburg. Maybe we can find her there. The caretaker at Cedar Grove is excellent but he can't find her record. We know there are people buried there with no marker or record but they were civil war and before not recent... We'll keep looking! regards, Ann
RE: Clara Grace Martin Phillips Adrienne, I talked to Bucktrout again and their records show her buried at Cedar Grove too. I will try to call or go down to the city offices soon and see if I can't dig up some more info. Sorry this has taken so long.... Ann
RE: Clara Grace Martin Phillips Adrienne, Can you give me any other clues like other relatives buried near her or any names from the death certificate that I might search out? It might be helpful if I had a copy of the death certificate. Still searching, Annamcgreer@gmail.com
Clara Grace Martin Phillips Adrienne, The caretaker for Cedar Grove and I have been over the records again and cannot find Clara Martin Phillips. We thought maybe she was buried under Martin but no luck. What makes you think she was buried in Cedar Grove in Williamsburg, Virginia? I think there are Cedar Grove cemeteries in other cities/states. If you have further proof or some kind of documentation we might get a better idea of where to look. I see on Find A Grave that KJ Proctor has also looked for Clara, KJ is in my DAR Chapter. regards, Ann Greer firstname.lastname@example.org
RE: Cedar Grove I've read before of problems with the records for Cedar Grove...which has graves going back to the Civil War. Can't remember if it was a flood or a fire that may have destroyed some records, but memory makes me think that was long ago. At any rate, John and I will be glad to go and look. Right now it is in the upper 90's with a heat index over 100, so it may be a few days, but we will take a look!
Cedar Grove I don't mind going to have a look. Williamsburg isn't that big and there are many records not complete on this cemetery. If we don't find them, I'll let you know. John and I are always researching family cemeteries. Which funeral home held the services...Nelsen, Bucktrout or Whiting?
