I'm a dabbler, not a dedicated genealogist or expert researcher.

I particularly like to connect family member memorials to other family memorials, and I like to add and correct information such as full names, exact birth/death dates and locations.

I occasionally go to local cemeteries and take photos for memorials that don't yet have any, or add memorials for graves I see that don't have a memorial. I wish I had more time for this but I'm still working full-time.

I think FindAGrave is a great resource, but I think there's A LOT of room for improvement.

Seems like too many contributors are all about the numbers, and add memorials as fast as they can without checking for accuracy. When a person dies, I think there should be a waiting period before adding a memorial to give time for family members or friends to do it.

I recently added my mother-in-law's memorial on the very day, just a few hours after she passed away. It felt morbid, but I didn't want a stranger to see the death notice and slap one up as soon as they could, because apparently, there are people who keep a lookout for someone's death and add the memorial immediately even without knowing much info. These people don't bother to do any more research about this person either.

*Since then, I also added a memorial for my brother a few days *before* he died - we knew the end was coming, and again, I didn't want to wait in case I couldn't do right away once he actually passed away, and someone pounced on a death notice for him.

Because people are in such a hurry to add memorials, a lot of obituaries have the date of death and the person's age, but don't put in the actual birthdate so people just leave that part blank. It usually takes just a couple of minutes to do a search to find it. A lot of times it's on the obituary at the top but not in the body of obituary.

For older graves, often only the date of death is given and then how many years, months, and days for the person's age. It can be a bit complicated to figure out in one's head (although doable) but there are numerous age calculators online to do it for you. Just takes a few seconds. No need to leave that field blank!

I think it's too bad when I put in for two memorials to be merged - one is complete with accurate information and the other has just the bare minimum or without inaccurate info and/or misspellings it's kept because it was first. The person who took the time to do it right loses their memorial and then all their hard work is transferred to the other person.

I've also come across quite a few duplicate memorials because the people aren't checking to see if there already is one. I've seen one contributor who had added hundreds of duplicates! Sometimes they were even duplicates of memorials she herself had previously added! She seemed to be adding them as quickly as she could (using cemetery records) and never checked to see what was already there.

I also believe transfers should be required for more than just immediate family or direct lineage. There's a poorly made memorial for one of my paternal aunts - it focuses on her tragic death and not on her life and has quite a bit of misinformation. I've asked for it to be transferred to me but didn't even get a reply. She has no other family closer than her nieces and nephews.

I don't expect every single family member's memorial to be transferred to me (I have many other extended family members whose memorials are just fine so I've not requested transfers for those) but there could be times when exceptions are made, especially when the creator has thousands and thousands of memorials and has no connection to the person. I've added a few memorials for people that I have no connection with and I'd be glad to transfer them to someone who is related or knew the person. It should be about the person whose memorial it is, not about the creator's ego.

I've come across a few other weird ego-related things - a few times when I've submitted edit suggestions, the memorial owner will decline the edit but make the changes anyway. It's as if it has to be their own idea or something!

This is a big one for me - There needs to be a way to indicate when a woman has more than one married name. I've come across a number of duplicates because one memorial has one married name and another has a different one. Seems to happen a lot when a woman was married for a long time to one husband and then remarried later in life after being widowed. She was known for many years and had children by the first husband, but legally her last name was the second husband's name when she died.

And then I think there needs to be a way to indicate when someone was known by their middle name. That's another cause of duplicate memorials. One person adds a memorial using the person's middle name as first name because that's what they went be, and then another person adds a memorial with the actual first name.

Well, again, I mainly enjoy linking family members and adding information to memorials to make them more complete. And if when I send edit suggestions, I have found information to verify what I've sent. I'm glad to provide that to anyone who asks.
