SOURCES FOR INTERMENTS AT HOLY FAMILY CEMETERY & ST. FRANCIS CEMETERY LOCATED ADJACENT TO EACH OTHER IN OLDENBURG, INDIANA

~*~*~ HOLY FAMILY CEMETERY

Many of the names of many of those interred at Holy Family Cemetery come from a booklet sent to me many years ago by a relative who lived in Oldenburg. The title is "Deaths/Burials at Holy Family Cemetery" but there is no author or publication information written on it. This booklet lists dates only until about the 1970's. Unfortunately, some dates are incomplete. I copied what was available.

Sorry, but I have no further information on any of the persons listed in that booklet other than my own ancestors whose surnames are listed above.

Additional information regarding burials at Holy Family has been obtained through the research efforts of Greg Meyer (1957-2019), who has kindly shared his work with me. Thanks! He has sent me a copy of the parish burial records from 1845 to 1988 that he extracted from the originals at Holy Family Church. These records include not only the burial and/or death dates but also provide additional information such as age, origins, birth dates, parents, etc. of those buried at the Church Cemetery.

While not 100% accurate, these records are still a valuable source. If you see any errors or have any additions please feel free to leave changes via the edit function at the top of the page. I'll be happy to update the memorial. Thanks!

SOURCE FOR PLOT NUMBERS

The booklet I have contains SOME plot numbers. All I have are entered on each memorial. Please feel free to send additions through to me using the edit function.

~*~*~ ST. FRANCIS CONVENT CEMETERY (Cemetery for the the Sisters of the Order of St. Francis)

Sources for the memorials I entered come from "Historical Sketch of the Convent and Academy of the Sisters of St. Francis... " written in 1901. I found this online at Google Books. It contained details about the history of the convent and the Sisters who lived pre-1900. This is the source of all the memorials that I entered at St. Francis Cemetery. It can be read online at:

HEADSTONE PHOTOS

I have been unable to locate an interment map for Holy Family Cemetery, so photo volunteers have been unsuccessful in locating specific headstones. As a result, Mike P., a fellow Find A Grave member, has kindly volunteered to photograph the entire cemetery. Thanks Mike!!

UPDATE: 5 May 2014: Mike has started taking photos of headstones at Holy Family. This project will take some time since Mike needs to fit it in around his other commitments. He has found that some of the headstones in the old section of the cemetery are badly damaged and therefore are unreadable. This is disappointing but can't be helped. Thanks Mike for all of your efforts. They're much appreciated.

UPDATE 22 Sept 2014: Mike has been hard at work adding photos and additional memorials needed so each and every person buried at Holy Family is represented. Thanks to him and others who have contributed, the cemetery is now 42% photographed. This project is a HUGE undertaking (no pun intended), especially since Mike also has many other home and work commitments. I know all of you who have family buried at Holy Family join me in extending many many thanks to Mike for all his efforts. THANKS MIKE!!

UPDATE 9 Aug 2015 The LDS Batesville Ward has been busy at work contributing their time and talents adding memorials and photographs to Holy Family Cemetery. I am so very grateful to them for doing this. THANK YOU!
