I am the son of John D.Gassaway who was born in Ellicott City Md. His father was William G.Gassaway .Griggs Gassaway 'father was Dr. William Nicholas Gassaway. Doc. Gassaway's father was William Augustus Gassaway. William Father And mother were John hanson Gassaway & Elizebeth Dorsey Gassaway of Germantown Md. Elizebeth Dorsey father was Caleb Dorsey Jr. who owned Elkridge Iron foundry , on the banks of the patapsco River. William A. Gassaway was the younger brother to John H. Gassaway jr. both were born in the rear section of the H style house on rifleford Rd. Germantown Md. William Augustus Gassaway was mayor of annapolis Md. later he and his wife Mary Farrow Gassaway owned an ran Briarley. Hall school for girls. in poollsville Md. My Grand father William N. Gassaway was an elected memder of the Maryland house of delegates for Howard county Md. He was partner with a doctor name ? they owned for a time. Patapsco Instetuit for girls . they tried to run a theatre . Dance hall were big bands could come play . John Mark Gassaway born in Seattle Washington. My father died when I was seven years old . My mother. Sally Ann Gassaway remarried Eugene Clare Carter who adopted me when I was 10 years old . thats were the Carter last name comes from. . I worked for the Md. park service. for five years , then worked for a lumber company . lost my right leg in a fork lift accident. Went on to run my own welding and ornamental iron Fabricating company . It was perfect job fabricating Iron gates . Working metal came natural to me like it was meant to be . I am retired now. Like my ancestor Caleb Dorsey metal forging & welding ,fabricating was my calling and I still love doing it . I also am restoring an antebellum cemetery which lies on our property in bedford ,Virginia 67 or more grave sites. dating from 1730's to 1860's both white and black people intrude there I think . Some head stones have full names others just dates. all stones are carved from field stones. mostly are all hand carved.
