In November of 2011, a dedicated group of neighborhood Scouts, Veterans, politicians, volunteers, Community Center staff and residents capped off a 10 month long effort and declared the neglect and vandalism at Pawtucket's Arlington (Mineral Spring Avenue)done. Signs were erected at the gate, the Old Waiting Room and all through the cemetery marking streets and lanes. Altogether volunteers have raised over 2000 tombstones and markers from under the ground ruin to standing and dignity in the 2 Municipal cemeteries. The effort is ongoing and about 85% completed, but we now mark 225 Veteran monuments from the Revolution to WW2, where before we could only find 4 dozen. Volunteers are always welcome and donations of water, supplies and research time are appreciated!
In the Spring of 2015, work was begun in Lincoln, on restoring the Turner and Sprague Avenue Lots and with the help of generous neighbors who volunteered afternoons of raking, brush cutting and cementing, we soon had partially restored the pre-Colonial, Colonial and Civil War denizens of these yards. Along the way, we discovered that these yards contained large numbers of Quaker burials (mostly undocumented because of no inscriptions and rough and buried field stones) that stretch from the late 1600's to the mid 1800's. We have worked all over Lincoln, Cumberland, North Providence, Attleboro, Smithfield and Woonsocket. Recently, we began working with Cumberland High School students who formed an Archaeology Club that has helped recover and do restoration work at many Cumberland yards...We hope to make these historical treasures and archives of our past more accessible and appreciated by the general public. We now work with the Blackstone Valley Historical Society and have worked in over 100 cemeteries...
