"RECORDING OF A CEMETERY" |
by Thelma Reagan and edited
by Betty Kuebler
Today we walked where others walked
On a lonely, windswept hill;
Today we walked where others wept
For those whose lives are stilled.
Today our hearts were touched
By graves of tiny babes;
Snatched from the arms of their mothers,
Who had to live on, and be brave.
Today we saw where grandparents lay
In the last sleep of their time;
Their beds are kissed by the sun and rain
As your's will be, and mine.
Today we wondered about an unmarked spot;
Who lies beneath this hollowed ground?
Was it a babe, child, young or old?
No indication could be found.
Today we saw where Mom and Dad lay.
We had been here once before
On a day we'd all like to forget,
But will remember forever more.
Today we recorded for kith and kin
The graves of ancestors past;
To be preserved for generations hence,
A record we hope will last.
Cherish it, my friend; preserve it, my friend,
For stones sometimes crumble to dust
And generations of folks yet to come
Will be grateful for your trust."

Thank you for the info about the sign. It would be a great item of family history to purchase. My sister and her husband go to Lebanon frequently to Bennett Springs. MAybe she can find it. Thanks again as in for the info. Rad was my great uncle.

Hi Roxanne - let me know if they need more info on how to find it - it's way on the back wall of the store, left hand side, about in the middle, just sitting out. I thought it was a neat sign, and they might really appreciate it. Thanks for passing that information on!

Hi Roxanne - I noticed a sign in an antique store in Lebanon MO the other day that said "Rad Carver Store", and when researching who that referred to, decided it may have been this gentleman. Don't know if you are acquainted with or part of his family, but you might let them know in case they would like to purchase it. It was a large sign against the wall at the extreme back left of the antiques mall just off the interstate, porcelain maybe, and they wanted $35 for it. I thought it was nice looking and a good price, but the family might want it for sentimental reasons.
Let me know if you have any questions.
