There are approximately 217 known burial sites in Highland County, Virginia (excluding duplicates and other anomalies). Four of these the current landowners are refusing access to the graves. Robert and Emma Matheny documented a portion of the 217 cemeteries in their 1986 book Vital Records of Highland County, Va. As of January 2023, I have visited 197, concentrating on the small family cemeteries. Sometimes the Matheny's left out directions or listed land marks or land owners that are no longer relevant. Making the task of finding all the cemeteries a challenge. Many of the family burying grounds are in remote mountain areas requiring a hike to reach them. Many have been abandoned and it takes some time to clear away brush in order to take good photographs.

Documenting graveyards in Bath County, Virginia & Pendleton & Pocahontas County, West Virginia, is ongoing.

I use a variety of sources to supply information for the graves I list. I attempt to add more than just dates and places. References that I use are Vital Records of Highland County Virginia by the Mathneys (They traipsed all over Highland from the late 1950's - 1985 transcribing many of the headstones in the county) Highland County Death Records 1853-1898 by Clay Hamilton. Pendleton County WV Grave Register. Other sources include 1910 Morton's History of Highland County & 1911 History of Pendleton County. Various family histories. Early issues of The Highland Recorder. Over the years I have complied information on graves (some unmarked) from the elder residents of Highland & Pendleton.

By November 2011 I had placed 1,000 names into the system, that seemed a lot at the time. As I had only intended to work on Surnames related to my family tree. Since then I hit 3,000 in October 2013. March 2014 4,000. As of July 2014 I surpassed 5,000 names.
