Starting January 25, 2014, I will be moving permenantly to Florida. |
** NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO ASK MY PERMISSION TO USE ANY PHOTO I'VE POSTED ON FINDAGRAVE.COM. YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO USE THE PHOTOS FOR WHATEVER YOUR NEEDS. ;o)
I currently live in Ocala, FL. My family and I are originally from this area (Go Gators!), and my mom and I decided to move back after a 25 year absence. I've always found cemeteries, especially old ones, fascinating because I'm a history buff and there are always graves with interesting stories. One or two have even prompted me to hunt down old newspapers and other data to find out more.
I had to retire very young, due to several back surgeries. All my years of crazy sports, the Marine Corps and working in law enforcement are not only behind me, but have definitely taken their toll. I tell people my warranty expired when I turned 30.
These days, I have several hobbies that keep me very busy (and, somewhat, out of trouble!): Geocaching is my BIG addiction and I'm out almost every day doing that (please visit Geocaching.com for more info and to start your own obsession), traveling, renaissance faires, pirate festivals, photography, and blogging.
My mom is the one who told me about this site (she's also the avid genealogist in the family). We figured if I'm going to travel and hike graveyards, I might as well try to help others if I can. She's often out there wandering with me when we're traveling (both geocaching and graveyard-rabbiting, which can often look like the same thing to the untrained eye), especially on the more challenging boneyards. I guess I've kind of adopted The Southern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery as my "home" cemetery. With a military and honor guard background, it just feels natural and like I'm contributing somewhere, even a little. I also enjoy the peaceful and often beautiful surroundings, and with everything I'm involved it, it's nice to go out for a few hours each week to tend and photograph the graves of our heroes.

Forest lawn on South Pine is the same...I have tried to sneak in and see my relatives, and then I wander off...they soon catch up and the last time I was there, (about 6 months ago) they called the cops on me, who in turn asked me to leave...it is not like it is private or anything...the obit is public, they tell you when and where they are interred...it drives me crazy...go figure...

Please do not get caught taking pics over at Good Shepherd. The last time I was there, they told me that I was trespassing if I did not have official business there. I was asked to leave.
Thank you for taking Richard's headstone photo.
