I am the son of T. L. & Verdie Graddy Surles. They are buried in the Preston Cemetery in Preston, GA.
My grandparents, on my fathers side, are buried in the Lake Providence Cemetery in Lake Providence Louisiana.
I am the oldest of 6 children born to T. L. and Verdie. Born on 6-18-1940 in Lake Providence, LA. I attended several schools and 3 different colleges before graduating with a BS in Chemistry and minor in Biology from Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, GA.
After my high schooling, was trained as a butcher, and using that skill worked my way through college.
Worked almost 2 years for Southern Nitrogen Co. in Savannah GA area, then to Great Southern Paper Co. in Cedar Springs, GA for 2 years, then to Alabama Kraft Paper Co. in Mahrt, AL. Lived in Columbus for about 16 years while working at the last job listed above. Moved to Pensacola FL in 1984 for a job with St. Regis Paper Co. now International Paper Co. and retired at 59 from Champion Paper Co. with 33 years of Paper Company Experience.
Married Jan Chandler of Americus Ga in 1964, have two sons, Darren Coe Surles, born in Savannah GA, and Brett Sterling Surles, born in Columbus, GA.
We now have, in addition to the boys, 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
We are retired but very active in our church, retiree organizations and other things.
