The oldest son of Robert E. and Polly S. (Booth) Jacobs born April 19, 1952 in Burlington, IA. Attended grade school in Pittsfield, IL, Knoxville, IL and Galesburg at LT Stone and Rose Hoben Welch. Attended Churchill Jr. High and graduated from Galesburg Senior High School in 1970. After high school attended Carl Sandburg College where he participated as a member of the mens varsity basketball team. On June 10, 1972 married Jean K. Garland of Little York, IL at Little Cedar Presbyterian Church in Little York, IL. Honorable Discharged U.S. military veteran serving 6 years in the Illinois Air National Guard attaining the rank of Sergeant. Began working for the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1973 as a Clerk, then in 1979 transfered by request to the train Operating Department working in Galesburg, Aurora, Eola, and Cicero as a Switchman, Brakeman and Burlington Northern/Metra Assistant Conductor/Collector. Transferred by BN/UTU Leave Agreement to Amtrak in 1987 as a Passenger Train Conductor working between Chicago and St. Louis on the Texas Eagle, the State House and the Anne Rutledge. After moving family back to Galesburg in 1988 worked between Lincoln, Nebraska and Chicago on the California Zephyr, Chicago and Kansas City on the Southwest Chief and between Quincy and Chicago on the Illinois Zephyr and the Carl Sandburg. Served his fellow United Transportation Union (SMART) members as Local Chairman of UTU Local 1525 and as their representative on the Amtrak Central Division Safety Committee. Represented the UTU as a charter member of the U.S. Dept. of Transportation supported Confidential Close Call Reporting System (C3RS) safety research and accident prevention program as a member of the Amtrak Western Region Peer Review Team (PRT-West). Retired from Amtrak at the end of April 2012 concluding a total of 39 years of railroad service. During his life in Galesburg has served his community and its youth as a Little League and Jr. Hardball League baseball coach, a Galesburg Jr. Hardball League Board of Directors member, a loyal Galesburg Silver Streaks basketball and baseball fan and volunteered as a Streaks Dad. Was an Ordained Deacon, Elder, Usher and loyal member at First Presbyterian Church, a Galesburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame member, and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by members of the Galesburg Noon Rotary Club. Jean and Dennis are both members of Galesburg Elks Lodge # 894. Dennis served as Tiler, Lecturing Knight, Leading Knight and Exhalted Ruler for the Lodge. Jean and Dennis both serve on the Board of Trustees of the Hebron Cemetery Association. Dennis was elected President of the organization in 2020 and manages the cemetery's trust fund, a gift to the cemetery from his maternal Aunt, Joan L. Booth. Jean and Dennis also serve as volunteers at the annual Galesburg National Stearman Fly-In. Jean and Dennis have two children, a son: James Robert Jacobs, a daughter: Emily Kay Jacobs and 4 grandsons: Carlin Joshua Parrish, Chase Robert Jacobs, Kyce Robert Jacobs, and Mekhai Amir Richardson.
