My parents William Harvey and Maudie Pauley Lowe loved their relatives and their heritage. As a child I could not have been less interested in family history, but as I got older and no longer had my parents and so many of our ancestors to ask, I became concerned about how information is being lost as we lose each family member.
A few years ago I became concerned that I did not even know some of the names on our family cemetery, and I started to find out all I could. Then when I found that all the graves have a close family connection, I wanted to know more. Fortunately I have countless cousins who feel the same way, and we started sharing information and pictures for a history of our cemetery.
When I learned that present members of my parents' small Regular Baptist Church did not know of its 120-year history, I compiled one to give to the church.
Our present church is over 180 years old, and with the help of my husband and some others, I compiled everything I could find about it and gave it to the church. I thoroughly enjoy researching.
Then I started collecting information for my children about what it was like to live the way we did in the 1940's and 1950's. With the unbelievable support of my husband and long-time Brushy friends and relatives, I wrote a history of our little area. It snowballed beyond belief. The thousand pictures in it attracted so many people, hungry for any information of their heritage. I could not believe the reception it got. I wish I could encourage others to save their own information before it is lost. It does not have to be a formal book. Even notes on scraps of paper in a box become important when there is no one left to ask.
By doing the book, I amassed so much information and pictures that needed to be shared. Someone introduced me to findagrave.com, and that has filled a tremendous need to put it where others can use it. I am amazed by the potential of the site to preserve a knowledege of our heritage.
