RE: Joseph Closkey
Good afternoon!

Thank you for taking the time to write regarding your search for family information. Apologize that I am not a relation, just want to leave a memorial token.

Wishing you the best in your search, Merideth!

I went looking for an 1860 Census
There was a Joseph M McClouskey (they misspelled it Mcclaskey)who was shown to be 6 years old with both parents born in Maryland...living in Cambridge, Guernsey Ohio. This Census would agree with the 1900 Census showing his parents being born in Maryland.

In this Census we find

Charles 57 Born in Maryland
Mary 46 Born in Maryland
Biddie A Female 22
William 21
Jane 18
Nancy 16
Margaret 14
Thomas 13
John 12
Charles 10
Mary F 10
Robert 8

Charles was a farmer with real estate worth $1500 and personal property worth 250.
Joseph M
Margery A 2

All of the children were born in Ohio

By the 1920 US Census
In the 1920 Census Teresa (spelling in this census), age 67, is living with Joseph in Carrick Allegheny County Pennsylvania.

In this Census it is shown that he was born in Ohio with parents in Ohio...hmmmm different from the earlier census. He is still a puddler at Byers Pipe Mill.

This web site talks about the A M Byers Company

http://www.stocklobster.com/2349.html

A.M. Byers' roots date back to 1864 when the original company was founded as Graff, Byers & Company. A.M. Byers was actually incorporated in 1903, and manufactured pig iron, and wrought iron pipe. Byers operated mills and blast furnaces in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Girard, Ohio (the Girard Iron Company). In 1925, the company acquired the Orient Coal & Coke Company which was incorporated in Pennsylvania.

Byers was merged into General Tire and Rubber Company in 1970

Hi there...
I missed the Theresa part...so I did a search for Theresa and Joseph...here is what I found

In the 1900 US Census there was a Theresa Mc Closkey who was born in January 1853 in Pennsylvania. The were living in Baldwin, Alleghany, Pennsylvania in 1900...their marriage year being 1879 or 1880. Her parents were born in Germany. The following children were living with them in 1900 George 18, Marcellia 16, Frank 14 and Joseph 10. Joseph was born October 1852 in Ohio...both of his parents were born in Maryland. Theresa had had 5 children but 4 were living. Joseph is listed as a Puddler in an Iron Mill.

A puddler is one who puddles iron or clay.

Puddling was an Industrial Revolution means of making iron and steel. In the original puddling technique, molten iron in a reverberatory furnace was stirred with rods, which were consumed in the process. It was one of the first processes for making bar iron without charcoal in Europe, although much earlier coal-based processes had existed in China.

Hi there Merideth
I don't believe he is in my family tree, but I could spend some time looking at records for you. I did find a Joseph F McCloskey living in Philadelphia in 1940 who was born in 1870 in PA. In this Census it stated that he worked in the Mechanical Side of Public Works...he was earning 1800 a month (average for that year for the US was 1400 a month). He had an 8th grade education. His wife was Ellen who was also born in PA and was shown to be three years older than him but in the 1930 Census it showed her to be the same age. Ann, his sister is living with them and shown to be 65 in this Census.

In the 1930 US Census, he was living in Philadelphia. He owned his home worth 5000 dollars. His parents were born in Ireland. His wife Ellen's parents were born in Ireland. He was a Clerk in the Public Works Industry. He and his wife were born married at the age of 38. His sister Ann is living with them. She was shown to be 57 in 1930 and working as a saleslady in a department store.
