Bio

Greetings, my name is Art. I live in Washington NC, and I started this genealogical journey over 15 years ago, much to the chagrin of my wife at the time. I was trying to trace the parentage of my great great grandfather Philip Benjamin Carawan, who seemingly plopped onto Earth from unknown in 1860 having been already married twice. That link has since been pretty much conclusively proven by a cousin, but on the journey I began researching every sideline until the database I have has become nearly a living thing. It seems now to cover all families east of I-95, with the curious exception of the extreme southeastern counties. I'm sure they will be included at some point as well.

Findagrave is a very useful resource for me, as well as something of a social networking tool. There is nothing I love more than history and talking about theories of how things came to be. Additionally, connections are always being made. We may be related, and we may not, but I'd bet I'm related to your granduncle's godson's nephew's wife. The world is a very small place.

I am not, and do not consider myself, a pure genealogist, merely a compiler of information. The last dusty courthouse I crawled through had more to do with a traffic ticket than it did with ancestry. This site is like that as well, to me, a collection of information. What you choose to do with it is up to you. Sometimes in the absence of information, you have to go with the odds until the information presents itself; in other words, if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, it's most likely not a chicken. That said however the information must be investigated and conclusions drawn on the basis of the facts. It's no good trying to make something work because it should, it's got to have a basis in something concrete.

Enough about philosophy. I encourage any and all communication from anywhere, and I'll help you if have something that will be of use to you. I'm easy to get along with. If I make a memorial here, I'll gladly transfer it if is your family in question. I've seen people getting snippy about memorials on this site, and that's stupid and a real turn-off. Just play nice like your mama taught ya.

The main NC counties I cover are Beaufort, Hyde, and the counties immediately surrounding them. I also have relations in Harnett, Person, and parts north and east, so that list is not supposed to be all-inclusive. Immediate family names are Carawan, Ange, Reynolds, Loftin, Neal/O'Neal, Waters, and Baynor.

Good luck on your genealogical undertaking and I hope you find what you are looking for!
