I've been fascinated by cemeteries since I was a child. Trips to cemeteries all over upstate New York with my maternal grandparents visiting the graves of ancestors were events that I looked forward to. Being a volunteer for Find A Grave is a great way to combine several of my hobbies: local history, photography and genealogy. It's also a great way to discover unique monuments and enjoy the beauty and art in cemeteries. When I go to a cemetery I photograph as many monuments as I can and work directly from those photos to add memorials to Find A Grave. If there is a formal identification of the grave site, I will add that information, but many times the cemeteries are small and old and there is no plot identification. I will often take two photos of the same monument one a close up and one a long shot, so the grave might be easier to locate in the cemetery, if someone is going to look for it. I strive for accuracy and welcome edits where appropriate. The photos I add may have my name on them. I've visited cemeteries in many areas of the US and have added some memorials that are far away from my home in New York. My personal goal is to visit as many of my ancestor's graves as I can locate and it was a pleasure to be able to visit the grave of my Pilgrim Ancestor, John Howland, on Burial Hill, in Plymouth, MA in the Fall of 2017, and his wife, Elizabeth Tilley Howland's grave, at Ancient Littleneck Cemetery, E. Providence, RI in January 2019. I hope through the memorials I have added I will help others to connect or locate the final resting places of their ancestors. Please, feel free to visit the page I have created on Facebook; Tombstone Tourist Views of New York State Cemeteries and the group Graveyard Angels Saints Skulls and Epitaphs.
