i have been researching my heritage for 6 years now and have learned much. Although I have known since I was little that my great grandfather, Heber Doust Curtis (1872 - 1942) was a famous astronomer of the "Great Debate" in 1920. His father, Orson Blair Curtis, wrote about his time in the Civil War titled "The History of the 24th Michigan of the Iron Brigade" in 1891 which is thought to be one of the best recountings of the Civil War. In contrast my mother's family, the Luttrells migrated from Texas, earlier from Oklahoma, Tennesse, Virginia in the 1700's, then Ireland (Luttrellstown Castle), then Dunsmir Castle in England. They can be traced back to the Lutres of Normandy, France who came from Viking invaders of the Lutros in 750 a.d. All very exciting stuff. I usually spend a few hours a day researching and "Find a Grave" has been invaluable. Happy Hunting everyone.
