Bio

My great-great-grandparents lived in New Milford, PA. They moved there from Montague, New Jersey in the early 1850s. It appears that they were one of very few black families in New Milford in the years that they were there. It was in 1984 that I learned that Margaret Westbrook had been buried in the New Milford Cemetery in 1884, but I understood that as of 1959, her gravestone was no longer legible (as noted in the History of New Milford which had been published that year. I met George Campbell, who, I believe, was editor of the book and he told me he knew nothing more about this black woman who was buried in the cemetery. I am delighted now to discover that her gravestone has been identified and photographed! Her husband, Joseph Westbrook, was buried in the Williams Cemetery. I have been there and found it to be the most peaceful place I have ever visited, just as described in the History of New Milford. I met a descendent of John Williams in 1984 who told me about Joseph's grave and how he came to be buried there. I continue to look for the graves of three children of Margaret and Joseph Westbrook, all daughters. I have located those of the only son, my great grandfather, and the youngest sister.
