Bio

Dear Anne Rupert:
I am writing this to ask for your help. Any information would be welcomed!
Johann Spanknebel my great grandfather, was born in Hesse, Germany in 1/8/1824, died 11/13/1878 at age 54.
Anna Katherine Spanknebel Horn, my great grandmother, was born in Hesse, Germany 12/24/1830, died 9/16/1892 at age 61
They came over to USA as indentured servants. I do not know whom they served or why they left Germany. The 1860 Census listed John and Anna Spanable as living in Seneca County, Ohio.
Johann Spanknebel, aged 68, married Anna Katherine Spanknebel Horn, aged 61, married 9/16/1892 in Hesse and had ten children:
Anna Catherine Faulkner (Spanknebel) 1851
Jacob N. Spanabel 1864
George Spanabel
Peter Spanabel
Lizzie Sickles (Spanknebel)
Emma Culp (Spanknebel)
James Spanknebel
Margaret Edgington (Spanknebel)
John Spanabel
Cassie Ewing (Spanknebel)
It was Jacob N. Spanabel who changed the family surname from Spanknebel to Spanabel. Both Johann's and Anna's gravestones, in Evergreen Cemetery in Leo, OH, list the names as John and Anna Spanabel.
Jacob N. Spanabel was buried in Midway Mennonite Church Cemetery in Mahoning County, OH, with his wife, Lydia A. His Find a Grave Memorial # 71009512.
I have several questions I would like assistance:
1. Could you provide obituaries for Johann, Anna and Jacob?
2. Why did they leave Germany?
3. What were the circumstances under which they served as indentured servant?
As you can see, I have many questions. I would be totally indebted to you for any information regarding the above.
Sincerely,
Mary Spanabel-Weber
