Joseph W. Giambrone's Service
The Memphis Bell SN 414-24485 photo is placed in error. Joseph W. Giambrone for which the related memorial is shown, did indeed fly in a B-17. However, he served in the 487th Bomb Group's 836th Bomb Squadron as a Ball Turret Gunner. He was based at Lavenham Field STA 137 numerous kilometers south of Bury Saint Edmunds. Its construction was done and the field opened in April 1944. The 487th BG was there until the end of the war. Initially, they were equipped with B-24 Liberators, but switched to B-17s which they used to fly over 187 missions by April 1945. The field was abandoned after the war. The 487th BG included the 18th Weather Squadron, the 836th BS and the 837th BS. The 836th ended the war with 15 X B-17s and 2 X B-24s.

The Memphis Belle was flown by the 91st Bomb Groups'
324th Bomb Squadron and their Crew Chief, Joseph M. Giambrone was born and raised Pennsylvania. The 91st BG flew out of Bassingbourn Field.

Please Remove the picture of the Memphis Belle from this memorial. Thank You...Sam
