Bigod's rebellion in January 1537 against King Henry VIII was led by Sir Francis Bigod (Oct 4 1507-June 2 1537. He was the son of Sir John Bigod and Joan Strangways (daughter of Sir James Strangways). Sir John Bigod (may have died in Northumberland in the Battle of Flodden in 1513) was the son of Sir Ralph Bigod (died in 1515). Francis was the ward of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and later attended Oxford. He married Katherine Conyers (died in 1566), daughter of the first Baron William Conyers.

Francis became a protestant who initially opposed the Pilgrimage of Grace. He was a Justice of the Peace and member of Parliament.He was hanged on June 2 1537 and buried at Greyfriars in London.
