I have just begun researching my family history, although genealogy has fascinated me for as long as I can remember. My immediate family has always been guided by a rather headstrong independence, myself included, and I am finding that this holds true with many of our ancestors. My father's family is from Brooklyn and Long Island extending many generations back, and then even further back across the Atlantic to Ireland and England on his father's side, and Austria on his mother's side. I was born and raised in Hawaii - practically a whole other world - after my dad married my Japanese mom. Growing up on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, I always felt disconnected from the world. Little did I know how deep my roots really lie!
