Bio

Sadie Day (Pasha) was born in East Harlem, New York in 1952, daughter of Daniel Day of Hampton, Virginia and Fannie Green (1927-1995) born in Baltimore, Maryland. Her mother was raised as a baby in Georgetown, South Carolina by grandfather Richard Smith a Cohen descendant. Sadie, the middle daughter wanted to know why she was raised as a Portuguese Jew, in East Harlem? So she began in 1976 researching her Cohen and Smith family history in South Carolina, after viewing the TV series "Roots" and Book by Alex Haley. In 1992 she focused her research on documenting the Cohen family surname and ritual traditions of Portuguese Jews in colonial Georgetown, Beaufort, Barnwell, Edisto and Charleston, South Carolina and Chatham County, Georgia in archives, libraries and listening to old family stories told in Oral Traditions, and remembering secret Judaic rituals learned at home as a child, taught by her mother and Georgetown family. She is also currently concluding over twenty years of an independent Cohen One Name Study of the Cohen surname among Portuguese Jews, enslaved "Geechee" Africans and Free Persons of Color including the low country Sea Islands of Georgia and South Carolina among modern day descendants. She has interviewed many modern era African American descendants with the surname Cohen in South Carolina and America, whose roots and ancestors were from Georgia and South Carolina, as her mother's ancestors with the documented Cohen surname. She is now footnoting her work in 2018, on "Cohen of Georgetown County, South Carolina 1750-1960: A Family History of Lowcountry Secret Jews and descendants in America, 2010" (manuscript), By Sadie Day Pasha.
