Greetings!

Welcome to my bio.

I am James Dale Onstott. I wanted to document what I know about my family history so that the generations to come will not have to wonder where their lineage came from. The Onstott-Stewart cemetery could not be located for over 80 years until my dad and I amazingly found it in the early 80's. I was probably 10-11 years old when we ran into it, my father was a piano tuner in that area during that time frame and when my dad handed the owner of the cemetery property his business card he noticed my dad's last name, he then informed him that he had something to show him on his property, he took us out to see the cemetery and the headstones had been trampled on by his cattle for years. I suppose sometime in the early 2000's Fannin county finally gated it for preservation as a historic landmark of the county.

A little about myself.....
I was raised in Achille OK from birth until my Freshman year of High School in 1986. I moved to Mesquite Texas in the Summer of 1986, and attended West Mesquite High School graduating in 1989. Attended College at Eastfield College Mesquite TX, served in the U.S. Navy from 1993-2003, and served in the U.S. Army from 2003-2007. I currently reside in Oklahoma City OK, and work at Tinker A.F.B since January 2011.
I recently graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts and will be starting my Graduate degree work in the spring of 2015 at the University of Oklahoma in pursuit of two Master degree's, one in International Relations, and one in Human Relations.

I am a direct decent of William Onstott who is buried in Hilger Cemetary. William Onstott who is buried in Hilger Cemetery and Elizabeth Onstott were married and were the original settlers of Fannin County. Not sure why William is buried in Hilger and not on his land which was located where the Onstott-Stewart cemetery is located. His son William Sercy Onstott Sr is buried in Onstott-Stewart Cemetery in Fannin County with his mother Elizabeth Onstott. This burial site is on the original Onstott 1st Class land that was granted by the Republic of Texas for service in the Texas-Mexican war. The county of Fannin has deemed this burial site as an historic land mark due to it being a part of the history of the county. The Onstott's were original settlers of Fannin. William Sercy Onstott Jr is buried at Rosewood Cemetery in Achille Oklahoma. He is William Sr's son. Burtrum Glen "Penny" Onstott is buried in Rosewood Cemetery, William Sercy Jr's son and his son Dewey "Butch" Onstott is my father. I have a daughter, Miranda Jewell Onstott, born 04/03/1994 in San Diego CA, and a son Ethan James Onstott who was born in Virginia Beach Virginia when I was stationed there while serving with SEAL TEAM SIX, he was born 12/03/1999. He is currently living in Rockwall Texas, and attends Rockwall-Heath High School.

I am related to the Onstott's from Hunt county Texas as well, John Onstott and William Sercy Sr were brothers I believe but were separated in age by over 10-20 years. Not by choice have you, but because John was born in either Tennesse or North Carolina, and William Sercy Sr. was born in Texas. It is to my knowledge that John was William Sercy Sr. older brother. William Onstott and Elizabeth settled the land that the Onstott-Stewart cemetery is on. I believe John was still in North Carolina or Tennessee when William arrived in Texas in the early 1830's. John must have found out about Texas fighting for independence like many Easterners knew back then and traveled to Texas to enlist in the Texas Republican Army. William and his son John each were granted a large amount of land for their service from the country of Texas (Yes, Texas was its own country before it joined the Union). Texas at the time was limited on funds paying their soldiers for serving in the Army, so they paid them with what they had a lot of, that was LAND. It is my believe John settled the land in Hunt County, and William the land in Fannin. Any help with these claims would be great!

This information has been handed down for generations but I cannot verify this information. Story told is that my Great-Great Father William Sercy Onstott Sr was murdered (shot off his horse) on his own land when his son William Sercy Jr was 8 years old. William Sercy Onstott Jr didn't inherit the Onstott land that his father owned due to a step sister filing abandonment of the land when my Great Grand father William Sercy Jr did not return from a hunting trip that lasted for over 2 months in the woods. My Grandfather looked into this many times, visited the Fannin county courthouse to prove that his grandfather did not abandon all his land but found that many of the land records filed at the court house were destroyed by a fire (The court house burned down in December of 1929). My grandmother Pearl Onstott (Penny's wife) told me that my grandfather was tired of fighting for our land and just sold everything they had and moved his mother Dora, and father William Sercy Jr across the Red River north to Indian Territory and bought half of the North side of the town of Achille. That is how we ended up in Achille OK.

We are also related to those Onstott's buried in Hilger Cemetery as well. If you are reading this and believe you are related send me an email, I will be happy to chat with you.

Thank you and may god bless.

Very Respectfully,

James D. Onstott
