Bio

Retired in Trumbull County. A Navy submarine veteran, from 1970-76, who supports the placement of US Flags in Braceville & Newton Falls West-Side Cemetery for Memorial Day with the American Legion Newton Post 236 and volunteers. A family legacy passed down from my parents Chester and Loraine Nelson, who did the Braceville "Trumbull County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions 1800-1930" updates together (1983 TRCO OGS republished). My ancestors, back to the American Rev., are buried in Braceville, Newton Falls East and West Side, and Niles City cemeteries. Hence, cemeteries of most interest.

My father, a WWII Navy veteran, USS New Orleans (CA-32), served in the Pacific Theater, placed flags in the Braceville Cemetery for decades with Earl Husman, a Pearl Harbor veteran and hospital corpsman; assisted by community volunteer organizations (Boy and Girl Scouts, Lions Club, etcetera). There are 454 veteran graves with flags placed in 2021 (501 tracked in 2022; 16 unproven by Ohio research; less 43 unmarked graves). About 5% of known veterans are in unmarked graves (i.e. 4 Rev. War; 4 MIA in WWII; 7 in Civil War cemeteries, etcetera). The County Recorder "Soldier records registered from 1800 to 1997" (256 reviewed and synched for Braceville; is not exhaustive as courthouse registration is optional; 613 for Newton Falls). See VIRTUAL cemeteries that begin "vet_" for War Periods as complete as "practical" with Find A Grave memorial links. See "avet_" for World War I (50 veterans) or World War II (177 veterans; 1 known who survives; only a select few added to the virtual WWII cemetery due to maintenance issues - e.g. several served in two wars and only 1 can be linked to a virtual cemetery).

A member of Newton Falls American Legion Post 236 since 2014. A project begun in 2016 is to create a Newton Township veterans "names and index" list to locate any veteran grave in that Twp., and four surrounding township cemeteries, where US Flags exist or could be placed. Currently at 1,100 Newton Twp. veterans (e.g. 7-township cemeteries). Over 2,190 veterans when including 4-adjacent townships of: Braceville, Portage Co. (St. Joseph's and Hawley in Paris Twp.), and Mahoning Co. (Vaughn, Lake Milton). A printout of these names will eventually be in the Newton Falls library Local History room. Being Commander of Post 236 for 4- year (2018-2021); and documenting their history has created some delays with the latter.

Taking Volunteer Photos has been an unexpected addition. Usually, I search other cemeteries for a Braceville or Newton Falls veteran or their family buried there. If there is any photo taken by myself that you would like replaced, just let me know by Message, email or a standard Photo Request. In 2017, Niles Union Cemetery was photographed. In January 2018, a thousand memorials were added to Braceville Cemetery from a set of photos taken the prior summer (if you research these names, simply ask for a transfer). In 2021, Oakwood Cemetery sections remaining have been photographed (e.g. flat stones; covered by leaf debris). Kerr's Cemetery was also photographed. In 2021, Crown Hill Burial Park was photographed. These assist with photo request locations, so that better photos can be taken.

The Warren Library Local History Room was closed beginning 11/1/2021 for several months. The staff was cutback to 2. By late 2022, construction and expansion of the Warren library was completed. Use the "Research Request Form and Policy" at this link [ https://www.wtcpl.org/locations-hours/local-history-genealogy-center/lhg-research-request-form/ ] to have free Trumbull County obituaries e-mailed to you if available in the Indexed Warren Tribune Chronicle from 1900 to today (less at least six months for microfilm availability and time to create an index). The link has changed in the past, which requires finding the Local History Room obituary links from the main page : [ https://www.wtcpl.org/ ].

Work was completed in Niles Union Cemetery for 429 known veterans buried in the Soldiers' Plot (Section V for Veterans) three years ago (2018). Added 322 previously absent veteran names in 17 rows (added Obits; of which 10 names were not located in the local Warren Tribune). Interments in the Mausoleum were added due to limited access to a locked-building (197 known burials).

Of Historical note for Braceville:
WWI deaths and burials in France are a challenge; two veterans KIA were found who should have attended Braceville one-room schools (7 existed in that era). Their parents lived in Braceville during the war and were notified in Braceville of the deaths of their son (James Armstrong enlisted in Leavittsburg {from Phalanx Mills}; Jalma Wilkins had a Newton Falls address during the War (actually in Braceville Twp. with no post office). None previously were known or remembered.

Both are buried in France:
Pvt. James E. Armstrong Feb 7 1892-Sep 12 1918 KIA. Age 26.
Sgt. Jalma Clement Wilkins, ca.1877-July 15, 1918 KIA. Est. Age 41.

See Sgt. Jalma C. Wilkins as Find A Grave Memorial 56641126; photo request has been fulfilled on July 2, 2018, which confirmed the needed corrections to his name in the original. See Pvt. James Armstrong as Find A Grave Memorial 54772167. Jalma enlisted in 1899 in Cleveland; and is found in the 1900 (KS) & 1910 (GA) census as single, on Army bases, as a single "career" veteran.

Thanks. Rick
