British Prime Minister. Graduating with a master’s degree from Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1780, he studied law and became MP for Devizes in Wiltshire, in 1784. Entering politics, he was elected as Speaker of the House of Commons in 1789 and became Prime Minister, serving (1801-04). During his term, the Peace of Amiens was signed with France and parliament overhauled the whole tax system. Declining a second term, he was elevated to the House of Lords as the 1st Viscount Sidmouth in 1805. He accepted the post of Lord President of the Council in and then became Liverpool's Home Cabinet Secretary. He resigned from public service in 1832 and lived in retirement until his death from influenza at age 86.
