In a world often defined by harshness, cruelty, and indifference, Catherine Violet Hubbard stood as a beacon of compassion and kindness. Born on June 8, 2006, in Danbury, Fairfield County, Connecticut, Catherine was a spark of love and affection, burning brightly in the hearts of those who knew her.

Blessed with a natural affinity for all creatures, Catherine had a unique bond with animals. Whether it was a fragile insect perched on her fingertips or a beloved family pet nestled against her, every creature seemed to recognize her as a friend. Catherine had a dream, one that she often shared with those around her. She dreamed of owning and operating her own animal shelter one day, offering a safe haven for animals. Her love for animals was so profound that she created business cards for her future animal shelter, proudly wearing her self-appointed title of "Care Taker."

Tragically, Catherine's dream was cut short on December 14, 2012, when the unthinkable happened. Catherine, along with her classmates, became victims of a heart-wrenching tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Her dream might have been abruptly halted, but her love for animals and her message of compassion were destined to endure.

In the wake of this great tragedy, the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation was established in 2013. The foundation is a living testament to Catherine's legacy, an embodiment of her lifelong dream, and a means to share her radiant spirit with the world. The Foundation was created to promote compassion and healing through the human-animal connection, carrying forward the mission that Catherine had set for herself.

In 2014, the Connecticut State House of Representatives and Senate unanimously awarded the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation over 34 acres of farmland. This plot of land would eventually become the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, a tribute to Catherine, embodying her dream and her spirit of kindness.

The sanctuary offers a safe haven for all creatures, providing them with the care and compassion Catherine believed every creature deserved. It is a place of peace and inspiration, a testament to the enduring love of a little girl for all creatures. The Sanctuary has become a beacon of light, echoing Catherine's unfulfilled promise and inspiring others to share her vision of a world where all animals are cared for and loved.

Since its inception, the Catherine Violet Hubbard Foundation has raised over $7 million. It has received grants from organizations such as Petco Love, ASPCA, Tito's Vodka, General Mills, and many more. These funds support a diverse range of programs and initiatives, including a pollinator protection initiative, community workshops on animal care and environmental protection, and aid for seniors to care for their pets.

Over the years, the Sanctuary has grown, hosting free educational programs, animal rescue events, and summer camps, reaching more than 150,000 people. It stands as a testament to Catherine's enduring love for animals and her spirit of compassion, inspiring all who visit to honor and cherish all living creatures.

10 years after the devastating event, Catherine's mother, Jenny Hubbard, keeps her daughter's memory alive through the sanctuary. In an interview with CBS2's Cindy Hsu, she spoke of Catherine's love for animals, saying, "Whether it was a stuffed animal that she carried around for the day, or it was a creature that she found in the yard -- a frog, or a worm, or a butterfly... Or a family pet. Her heart was to make sure that she loved them."

The sanctuary is being developed continually with plans for educational workshops, a library, and a veterinary center for rescue animals. It has a pavilion surrounded by benches and a barn for goat yoga. Community gardens, meadows, and nature trails grace the property, offering a place of peace and healing for all visitors.

Catherine's mother also spoke about the healing power of the sanctuary, saying, "From a community standpoint, I think that just it being a space of acceptance has been a huge benefit. For me personally, having a place where I know that Catherine's legacy and her love lives."

The sanctuary hosts events like the "Race for Catherine," a 5k race that raises funds for educational programs. The race had over 225 participants from 25 states, including Hawaii, in its inaugural year. This event is just one of the many ways the sanctuary commemorates Catherine's love for animals and her belief in kindness and compassion.

Catherine's dream and her love for animals are immortalized in the sanctuary, offering peace and solace to countless people and animals. Her legacy continues to inspire and make a difference in the world, proving that love and compassion are enduring forces, capable of transcending the constraints of time and tragedy.

Even as we remember Catherine Violet Hubbard and the tragedy that cut her life short, we must also celebrate her life, her dreams, and her love for all creatures. In her memory, let us strive to be kinder, to respect and cherish all living beings, and to carry forward her legacy of love and compassion. Her life was short, but her impact is everlasting.

Catherine's passion and love for animals live on in her sanctuary, her foundation, and in the hearts of those who remember her. She teaches us that even in the face of unspeakable tragedy, love and compassion endure. And perhaps most importantly, she reminds us that each of us, in our own way, can make a difference. Let us honor her memory by embracing the values she embodied and continue to work towards a world where all creatures are cherished and protected.
