Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In September 1862, he joined the 126th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry at Camp Steubenville, Ohio and was commissioned Captain of Company B. He participated at the Battle of Cedar Creek, the Campaigns in North Alabama and middle Tennessee. At the battle of Nashville, December 15-16, 1864, he was Colonel in command of the 183rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Under Union Army Major General William T. Sherman, he led the 183rd Regiment to victory in the Campaign of the Carolinas, in early 1865. For distinguished service he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers, March 13, 1865 and mustered out of regular service at Washington, D.C. on June 25, 1865.
