Mississippi Governor. He graduated from Washington College, studied law, moved to Mississippi, was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Entering politics, he was a member of the Mississippi Senate, (1835 to 1837). In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat the 12th Governor of Mississippi, serving until 1842. As Governor, a state library was founded, a women's property rights bill was sanctioned, land was secured for the site of a new state university and construction was completed on the state penitentiary. Declining to run for reelection, he resumed practicing law until his death.
