World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Tipperary, Ireland, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, British Expeditionary Force. In actions at Flanders, Belgium, on April 20, 1915, 2nd Lieutenant was commanding a company in a front trench on Hill 60. Although under heavy bombardment, plus being wounded in several places, he remained at his post and led his company in repelling a strong German assault. During a lull, he insisted in returning to his trench, which was again being subjected to severe bombardment. With his company being dangerously weakened, he went back to his battalion headquarters, reported the situation to his Commanding Officer and brought up reinforcements. With these reinforcements he held his position throughout the night, until his battalion was relieved the next morning. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he promoted 1st Lieutenant and was vested the Victoria Cross by King George V on July 12, 1915. Remaining in the British Army, he served in World War II and retired a Brigadier General on February 26, 1946. He was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey, in 1953 and appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1956. He died at age 82 in Shalford, Surrey.
